In 1995 I had a lab partner from Japan who told me this story:

When the Kobe earthquake hit in 1995, families in Japan called their successful children to come and help them.
These were adults in industry, and leaders in business and government. But they were so busy they couldn't get away, so the anxious families called on their "disobedient children" These were the children who had tattoos and crazy haircuts, who had less visible jobs. The ones that strict Japanese families didn't brag about so much,
But,
these disobedient children were the ones who came to help dig out their homes from the rubble.
I remember that lesson often.
It may be the disobedient children who save you.
