Happy New Year
Apparently I speak a multiple form of English that can't be identified to any particular region.
It feels like a reflection of the many locations and experiences that have been my life.
I love accents.
I love to hear Brazilians speaking Spanish.
I love to hear folks from India speaking English.
I have to really focus when I hear Newfoundlanders speak,
It's fascinating to hear the Japanese speak Portuguese.
I love the subtlety of the Canadian accent.
I always enjoy the stories that accents tell:
The struggles with a new language;
the pitfalls in English that perpetuate themselves;
and the lilt in a second-generation language speaker that still carries tones from a parent's language.
These accents are suggestive of somewhere, but not quite from there.
I guess I am used to being "not-quite from somewhere",
and it seems my language isn't either
